Environmental concerns - extra post, to give a chuckle, perhaps.

 

So the sorry saga begins here and I soon decide that I need to stop and get some gloves on. 

 And yeah, I've been washing them in a bucket - forunately the weather is pretty benign at the minute, I can rise them, leave them on the Brick of Scrutiny's table to dry and they can stay outside in the shade.  The main culprit was already deceased, probably through ingesting plastic.

He/she may look peaceful, but these little twats have eaten most of Admiral and Mrs Drax's worldly goods as well as most of Austrailia.  And their behaviour in my garage isn't condusive to a long lasting peaceful co-existance, either. 

That's not weathering, it's mouse shit. 

Needless to say, a new plastic container with a fitting lid has been obtained for the air armada.

Christmas Post 1 "Merry Siphmas"

First up on the Brick of Scrutiny are some finished models.  "Ah, it must be Christmas, Zzzzz has finished something.  But no, it wasn't me; Siph Horridus from Wee Men did these for me in exchange for some Sisters of Scissors. 

For those of you unfamiliar with such things, these are FW's Vorax; which are horde killing hunter droid.  Their aesthetic is based on the 'Crusader' robot from the old 1980's robots.  For some reason, they don't get pushed like some of the other FW robots.

These are obviously ancient assets belonging to the Ad Mech tide to the Legio Astorum, proudly wearing Warp Runners colours.  Unless you're tanks, plural (and even then, the Lightening Guns mean that's uncertain) then for the time being, the BoS is safe.

And just for scale, there's a Tech Priest. 

Many thanks to Siph for these - If I had the skill to assemble and paint these (they are fiddly kits) then I'd be sorely tempted to get some more; their sinister purposefulness makes them very attractive little models.

Salute 2015 (part 2) Terrain Pieces

Eldar scenery.  I did phone Forge World six or seven years ago and asked if they were ever going to make a web gate.  I guess this is the answer.

The next shelf down; a Chaos warp portal thingy.  What's sauce for Eldar is sauce for Chaos; apologies to geese and ganders for that.

Now, as I went 'round snapping terrain pieces, unfortunately, I didn't clock who made what.  The two stand out brands for me were 4Ground and Sarissa, I remember that much at least.  Possibly because there were large displays of their products as supplied (ie unpainted) showing the whole range and looking like a sweet shop of 28mm terrain.

All of the stuff presented on the tables was finished to show the product off to best effect.  There was a guy in the back corner who had loads of trees and hedges (including bocage) and his stuff looked great.

This I think is the Arkam Asylum.  There's a batman game going on there, so I think that's a fairly safe bet.

This is one of the ships from the Fort George game.  Outstanding modelling.

A really nice warehouse, although it's 15mm ( I so wish I started with Epic rather than 40K).

Another one of the alien planets.  There were a lot of other games, including a couple of undersea ones (incl Stingray !).  The whole show was pretty mind blowing, but more of that next time. 

Missing Stuff

So, Marshall Argos has asked about the org and det of 72AG; whether we are talking about my collection or the Devos IV fluff is by the by; my collection being a small slice of some of the units present.

Anyway, yes: 72 AG has three Corps, XVII Korps, XVIII Corps and XXXVIII Corps.

Each of these is organised into five Divisions:  Each Division being between 4000 and 10000 men; so either one Regiment (ie the Corbainian 1st) plus attachments to round it out to an all arms force) or five(ish) Battalion sized bits of different regiments under a Divisional Commander.

Now I do have this tabulated in excel.  However, this will change through the campaign as Divisions are re-organised; ie the Corbainian 1st being rendered hors de combat - they will be rouled out (roulement being the attachment and detachment of units from formations) to either be broken up and used as Battle Casualty Replacements (BCRs) or used as a cadre about which the unit will be re-built.

I do plan on presenting this as an org chart with the usual symbols.  Col Scipio is good at this, so I'll ask him to give me a hand.  This will give a picture of the organisation down to unit level.

The Inquisitorial conclave and Black Templar mission are not included in this as they are not part of 72AG. (more about these this year as well) The Warp Runners detachment technically is a part of the Army (I can explain this, should anyone be interested), but is not actually under 4* General Zukhov's command - which is why it does not show up on the org chart.

Similarly, the Separatist PDF is worked out as well; the PDF consists of four Divisions, three of which are four BCT (Brigade Combat Team) roughly equal to a 72AG Division, but perhaps slightly smaller.  The BCTs are rounded out with a PDF Air Force Brigade and a Combat Supply Brigade. So this can be charted as well.

The PLA equals the Separatist PDF plus any partisans, mutant hordes or other visitors (which might include Skulltakers, Beserkers of Skallathrax, Emperor's Children sub factions, 'The Cleaved' and/or summoned or randomly manifesting deamons).

I do have a map of Devos IV, but it is a schematic of the planet in a sort of Mercator Projection.  I have other maps in my head which I will try to get out and onto the e-page at some point.

To go back to 72AG.  Doubtless many of you are aware that some other blogger's iggies have been bleeding for the emperor on the dung covered steppes of Devos IV; elements of the Palladian Guard and Mordian 7th form 905 Div.  Elements of Cadian 24th and 127th form 901 Div.  It goes on...

Generally bloggers have reacted well to me randomly wiping out bits of their army in the Emperor's name.  If you have an IG army, do keep an eye out for the odd mention here or there.  If you hit the 'background' label and go back far enough you'll find narratives on some of the formations and biopics of some of the people.  If you back far enough, you'll find a point where 72AG is three Divisions each of five Brigades.  Retcon ahoy !

Of all of the things mentioned in the Devos IV blog so far, one thing I have not done is assign actual dates to events.  This has been quite deliberate.  DKK 19 Armd Regt did not go to Taros (IA3), it came to Devos IV.  The Chief of Staff of XXXVIII Corps was Col Winterborne's predecessor as CO of Prea 4 Mech  Regt. The Fantoma 313 Drop Regt were part of XXXVIII Corps, but before BG82 was formed, possibly before Marshall Argos was born.

So all of this needs sorting out as well.  Some of the posts in this blog are not in chronological order, you will have noticed.  What I have to do here is find a likely date and then stick it in as the start of the campaign.  So if I do ever PM you asking something that seems a little odd ('Its made up Zzzzzz, write what you like.' I hear some people saying), it just the pedant in me wanting to tie all the details nicely together.

If you have an intimate grasp of the chronology of the late M40, have a burning urge to see your iggies die in droves on the dusty prairies and smashed up cities, or want to know more (or add something in) then do PM me or leave a comment; Just to be clear here - 72AG as three Corps does stamp out the PDF all the way to Xyphonica - the arithmetic of war is pretty clear in this regard.  What they find defending the ruins you can pretty well guess at, it's red and purple and not a sunset.

The next couple of weeks have a few more character/background posts lined up - giving a little more depth, but still no organogram or timeline.  Soz.

I don't know if you have this on your blogroll or not (unless you're Admiral Drax, who is my gateway to 'Guardsman-A-Day').  But this is unlike all of our other blogs.



This blog is, quite simply, art.  In and of itself.



What you get is not necessarily a guardsman per se, but a slightly abstract window on one Astra Militarum deployment.



The regiment appear to have been not entirely standardised in the first place and appear to have been deployed and then forgotten about by the DM.  The upshot of which is, as you browse the blog that bits are variously trying to remain staunchly Iggy, other bits are going feral and there's a hint that some of the farest flung bits might actually be turning into the enemy that they were sent to Litmus Prime to counter.



I suspect (and hope) that we are not going to get a definitive answer any time soon.



Some of the modelling and colourschemes might not be to everyone's taste or idea of what the IG aesthetic should be, but I think that this is part of this piece of art's engaging mechanism.  As you browse through it, you never know quite what you'll see next (ie a model where every single component has come from a different kit), let alone what it might be.

It does feel nice having been nominated for a Liebster again.  I know that part of this is to promote other blogs to an ever widening audience.  So taking my 'core audience' into account, here's a few:

Andy Kirkpatrick is Hull's second most famous climber; this link is to the front page of his 'site; I've found that linking directly to his blog always ends up in an unfollowable URL.  Anyway he's a bit of star in the climbing world - you might have seen him dragging Alex Jones up a cliff in America for Children in Need.

The Northern Lights - An English ex-pat living in Finland; a lot of the posts are to do with climbing gear, cycling gear, camping gear, or climbycyclocamping gear.  Which interests me.  However, the real value is the politics and media watching posts - you can search back for those.

The wonderful wobbly model syndrome.  Some things in here, that I admit I don't understand - I figure they are jokes about rules and leave it at that.

Dan Eldridge's Arcadia Prime, if only for the camo painting how-to post.

There's this as well, which I found via the responsible one's blog.  I like the way this guy writes and I like that he (he ? How very presumptuous of me) points out the inaccuracies and defects in things.

Andy BG's Iron Legion. he's got a widget that does the 40K date but the juicy filling is the care and attention given to the individual marines of One Force.

IRL, these look better than they photograph, as you can imagine.  Especially loving PVP's description of those cat suit wearing girls as 'easy'.  Don't know if he meant to do that, but it made me smile...

In other news, I appear to be running out of figure cases and storage space.  It looks like I'll have to give serious thought to the final size and shape of the collection.  But the plan to re-furbish the inside of the garage will come first and should give me some more room.  Figure cases is an easy fix; the rest requires a little jiggery pokery.

Finding an hour is not too difficult, but there's not much one can reasonably achieve in an hour without leaving a mess for next time.  Which is something I really don't like doing, hence the apparently glacial progress.  But small steps can be taken which contribute to the overall success of the project. So don't be surprised if you see posts about moving bicycles and painting walls and floors.

This one should be worth watching; nice idea and pretty nifty with the plasticard.

So someone out there might remember the Sepulchre of Heroes.

It's been OK to play on, despite never getting to close to finished; it's supposed to be a bit of a memorial wall bedecked with the banners of past military glories.  I still plan on doing this, but probably as part of the cathedral/basilica that I'm going to talk my dad into building (seems funny to be saying that at 45, but there you go; 'tis a strange ol' world).

Anyway the thing is, it's a 2' x 2' (same size as a realm of battle tile) piece with an 18" long, 12" tall wall across the middle.  It takes up a lot of room.  And those bits can go into the cathedral/basilica. So part of progress this afternoon (Sat 15 Mar) will be to alter/modify/destroy some scenery, in order to make space elsewhere.  Welcome to the modern age !  Out with the old !  In with the new ! Terms and conditions apply !

Bang, smash, rip.  It was well put together, but no match for someone running out of space with new projects to do.

And the Chaos cultists have all arrived safely, so hopefully Admiral Drax will forgive Mrs Drax for posting them 2nd class. They look great - it'd be a shame to be burned to deaf in the name of the dark gods by anyone else...

Machinas (not really)

OK, then, If you have not been following Carmen's Fun Painty Time and his amazing work with large cowboys and samurai, you've missed out.  But the coolest thing on his blog (and he has retro 1950's space ship racing there somewhere) is the Machinas post apoc car thing.  Which has even spawned a kickstarter card game.

Now this is not actually anything to do with Machinas.  What 'Evil Cartoonist' has done with some toy cars to turn them into post Apoc cars is innovative and well executed.  Which is something you'll not see here:

These are the cars with which I whiled away the endless summer holidays of my youth, building roads around my grandparents flower beds: When I found a place that did not cause any conflict (at the bottom of the garden under the apple trees) the roads and little mud walls stayed there for years.

So you can see, a lot of the cars ended up with alternative paint jobs.  I probably stopped playing with these about 31 years ago (at a guess) and started crashing BMX (short-lived) and soon embarked on decades of AD&D and MERP.

And then festooned with decals, mostly left over from airplane kits.

Now, I spent years keeping these clean(ish).  Now I spend ages trying to get my 40K models to look this weathered.

You can tell the age of the car by how many times I re-decorated it. These two range rovers are my favourites.

And you can see the newest car there is the 1982 car show XJS.  Sheesh.

Now, as a car owner who has cars that looked like this (not teeny tiny, but obviously old and battered to heck), I'd hate to think what these would look like inside.  My W reg golf (old W, Scipio, you do the math) was never clean, it looked like one of those awful Topgear experiments.  IRL, these toy cars are full of dirt.

Now call me sentimental, but these cars are a link to a very happy childhood now long gone.  So they'll be lovingly hidden away in the loft.

And these plastic men were all dug up from the flowerbed in the few years after my grandfather died - when he was still gardening, he left that shady corner alone.  There's a shop in the town I grew up in which used to sell models and toys as well as art supplies (it only does the art supplies, the last time I was back there).  It was a brilliant place and I have fond memories of going there with my dad.  All of which leads me to think that there are about 200 airfix soldiers in the ground there somewhere where my grandparents lived.

And finally a confession - I was on ebay and there was an Elysian army advertised.  I put in a bid, not expecting to score.  But incredibly I did win and it's a not insignificant dent in my resolution not to buy more stuff.  Oh well, at I now have something to put in my Valkyries.

Free Gift !

You may or may not remember that I promised Admiral Drax a prize for fourteen consecutive posts over the Chrimbo holibob.

So these are three Heresy Miniatures SciFi troopers.  Now these fellows didn't have a home so, casting about the garage for something to fob off on poor ol' Drax, my eyes alighted on these.

 Sorry about the photo quality of these last few posts.  I suspect that more imaginative positioning of the lamps would have shown the little guys off a bit better.  No chance of a re-shoot, they went in the post a fortnight ago.

 They were fun to do.  Done in plain colours (revel ones, mostly), with washes and a smaller amount of drybrushing, esp on the armour.

 Their left shoulder pads are snot green (lovin' the name again there) with the IG badge from the Canadian transfer sheet and then dulled down and made to look like part of the same figure with successive washes.

 Hopefully, two shots with a bit more detail.  I like these figures, I think they look the part, the armour is not OTT, the weapons are not oversized for the people and their belt order kit is looking ok too.

So, that's it for these guys.  Obviously they went unbased, as my grey rubble would not match Admiral Drax's grass (man).  Good plausible excuse that.

Making a moral point with your blog.

It's late August and Mr Lee is signposting people to a particular post on Laughing Ferret's blog because the chuckling Mustelid has hit the milestone of 300,000 views or something.

Anyway, the entry conditions are to promote the post and signpost Laughing Ferret's blog.  He makes a couple of points as he describes the criteria for entry.

One point he makes is that you don't have to be a follower using blogger as he is aware that some people follow by email and some just lurk or browse.  So he doesn't want people to change the way they use the interweb just 'cause he says so.  Which on a moments reflection I think is an enlightened outlook that ought to catch on.  But it might not as *we* internet users in general, are getting more and more used to being channeled into certain behaviours.

Ahem.  The sort of behaviours I was really alluding to are things like accepting cookies.  When it first broke that cookies existed and what they were for, what they did, people would read the cookie acceptance piece on a website.  Now we largely don't.  We just click it without reading it.  Which has to be a mistake.  The last time eye toons updated, did you read the whole thing (again) or did you just 'accept' the new terms and conditions.  Similarly, the point made by Laughing Ferret - there are other ways to get your interweb without using google's blogger - lots of people use wordpress for example.  But a lot of people (me included) prolly started using blogger just because everyone else does.

Now I know that cookies can be turned off and I do have that IXthingy as my default search engine and am aware that my blog can be imported wholesale into wordpress and so on.  But that's not my point.  My point is that we should all think a little more carefully, perhaps, rather than just accepting every T&C that the interweb throws at us.

And harking back to the title of this post, I'll point you to Laughing Ferret's little exposition on the increasing use of the word 'pimp' as an adjective.  Such use of the word might be etymologically correct, but similarly, his interpolation of the word's use as noun and adjective is at once insightful and his stance on its use, morally courageous.

Scratch built Thunderbolt.

There are somethings in this hobby that I find to be an amazing display of commitment, time and skill.  For the time it must have taken to make these, I'd have just bought them. But then, even if someone with a steady hand and good eye had cut the plasticard, my Thunderbolt would still look like a sopwith camel.

Theory Question (breaking 40K)

OK. I've said on here before that one of the strengths of fortykay is that you can play kill team and apoc with the same little men and the same rules set (tweaked, but I hope you see what I mean). Another strength is that you can take your legal army to another part of the world and language not withstanding, play a game (it might be a struggle, but you could do it).



So what follows is an abstract argeument; I'm not suggesting for one moment that I would ever advocate this with anyone other than someone who I played with on a regular basis and it was just to see what happened etc:

This is a list from another games system (GZG, I think) it is itself extrapolated from an existing military formation from sometime in the last twenty years. I have 40kificated it a bit, just to bring it into context.

It does not follow FOC (duh !) rules and is certainly not optimised or even vaguely likely to last long on a 5th Ed battlefield (without some AFV back up). In the game system it is from, these guys are mounted in (GMC 4x6) soft top trucks.

Motorised Infantry Company:

Total Strength: 6 Officers, 117 Other Ranks (123 total troops).
Company Headquarters (2 Officers, 1 Other Rank)
The company headquarters comprises 3 personnel - the Company Commander, the Executive Officer (carrying the vox caster), and the Company Sergeant (carrying the company standard).
Mortar Platoon (1 Officer, 11 Other Ranks)
HQ Squad (1 Officer, 1 OR)
The HQ of the Support Platoon consists of just two men - the Platoon Commander and Platoon Sergeant (carrying a vox caster).
3 x Mortar Squad (3 ORs each)
Three three man mortar teams operating mortars. Each team has a gunner, loader, and ammo carrier equipped with a standard Las gun in addition to their mortar.
Forward Observer (1 OR)
Independent figure armed with standard Las gun, carrying an auspex and vox caster.
3 x Rifle Platoons (1 Officer, 35 Other Ranks each)
HQ Squad (1 Officer, 1 OR)
A two-man team, including the Platoon Commander and Platoon Sergeant. The Sergeant is armed with a bolter.

HQ Squad (1 Officer, 1 OR)
A two-member team, including the Platoon Commander and Platoon Sergeant. Both will be armed with las pistol and CCW.
3 x Recce Squads (8 ORs each)
Assault Squads include a Squad Leader, Hvy Stubber (Gunner + Loader), RPG [counts as ML] (Gunner + Loader), and three riflemen armed with standard las guns.
Other Attachments
Anti-Air Team (3 OR)
A three-member team, armed with a shoulder launched anti-air missile launcher (counts as a ML on an AA mount). They may have standard las guns or auto guns.
Anti-Armour Team (2 OR)
A two-member team, armed with an ATGW (counts as Hunter Killer Missile). They also have standard las guns.
Grenadier Team (7 OR)
Squad Leader, 4 riflemen, 2 grenadiers. They have standard las guns and the two grenadiers have GLs.
Casualty Aid Team (3 OR)
A two-member team, medic and assistant medic. They may have las pistols or be unarmed.

How do think this would play ? I was thinking that it would make for an interesting Opposing Force for an IG army. It would give the OpFor a distinct flavour, making them an interesting opponent (in terms of doctine/tactics as well as appearance), rather than just IG with the aqilla filed off.

I'd like to hear the nays as well as the ayes, if you have the time.

Bloggin'

It's a tool for communication, isn't it ? You could restrict the audience to a few individuals who you wanted to share some ideas/data with. Certainly this was my first intention - my audience were the original four apoc generals. No idea if they're still interested or not.



I see some other peoples FTW blogs and they seem to be so much more focused than my dribble. I waffle. I'm sure that I come across as a whinging, ineffectual person in my writing. There's relatively little "progress" these days. Oh well.

So on to communicating: My appologies to Courtney at the Cadian 127th for waffling about my Valkyre on his blog.

And for JL; The three I read were Hans Von Luck, Erhard Raus and Hienz Guderain. All good stuff. The Osprey book about the WWII Soviet Rifleman is also worth a look - quite IG flavoured, as it happens.

Blogging

On 20 Mar 10 Col Corbane put up a post in which he commented on commenting. I'd link to it, but for some reason blogger tonight won't see its way to pasting links. Ho hum.

Anyway, When I started this project web log, the intended audience were the three other players in the campaign. I was quite surprised when Admiral Drax first commented (and pleased as well). Col Corbane pointed me to the 'from the warp' group which has helped me position my view of what I do (contextualising it's place in my life I suppose, although that does sound pretentious). I now have a few followers as well. So I'm actually quite pleased with the whole thing.

I do just wonder if the original intended audience are still looking/have ever looked.

Frustrating lack of progress.

OK. I got four revel BMP2s. So the 13th Mech can now mech up. I got three of the LRMBT accessory sprues - these include the hull (not much of an accessory, more of a neccessity, IMO). I've got plasticard for the sides, so these will be wolverines as soon as I can find 24 suitable wheels from somewhere. And another ten cadians (who will doubtless become Bloodcoats).

Somewhere north of here I have Valks and more LRMBT to pick up. So my plastic crack mountain is just getting bigger. As you can tell by the mere fact that I am posting, my laptop is better. And the IT guys saved Army Builder for me - hurrah for the IT guys.

I've attracted another follower - welcome. I really hope that I'll be able to post some form of WIP before you die of boredom waiting for me to do something.

I've been in the garage this morning - I was going to do a bit of scenery (twigs and picture wire barricades on hard board basing) but it is too damn cold in there. I'm looking forward to finally firing up the airbrush I bought myself for my birthday. It's raining quite hard, so that's another thing to have to wait until it's both drier and warmer.

Once I've got the senior dog back from the vet this afternoon I may do a little painting. I can do that at least whilst she-who-believes-she-is-in-charge is out.
